Are You Detroit's Best Intern?

Dig Downtown, an online resource for everything good about Detroit, is running a contest to determine Detroit's Intern of the Year!

From Dig Downtown's blog:
Tired of slinging coffee? Interns, we’re offering you a chance to get your names and faces in front of Downtown Detroit’s leading employers. It’s a video contest to win Dig Downtown’s Intern of the Year award and the process is as easy as pie! Here’s how it works: Get out your camera, phone, or iPad and shoot an HD video about your experience working in Downtown Detroit. We encourage you to be creative and express yourselves as you like. Here are a few questions you can choose from to help you get started:
  • How is Detroit different from what you thought it might be?
  • What do you enjoy about spending time Downtown?
  • If you had a theme song for your life in Detroit this summer, what would you play?
  • If you could say one thing about Detroit to people who have never visited before, what would it be?
  • Where are your favorite places to hang out Downtown?
  • Do you plan on working in the city after your internship is completed?

Keep your video 3 minutes or shorter, upload to Youtube and tag it #DETintern. Then complete the submission form on the bottom of the page by August 29th to enter. Our panel of judges from the Downtown Detroit Partnership will choose the winner of this competition. The winner gets a fancy certificate, resume fodder, and their video featured in a few of the DDP’s annual events and outreach materials – which can be the networking of all networking opportunities, if we do say so ourselves. Even if you don’t win, all submissions will receive a shiny Detroit pin from Detroit’s own City Bird. Now if that isn’t incentive…Stay tuned for the announcement of the winner on September 15th!
You can submit your videos here!

And make sure if you submitted a video entry to leave the YouTube URL in the comments so I can be sure to check it out too!  Good luck!

#TigerBloodIntern Round 3 (video)

As you know, I made it to Round 3 of the #TigerBloodIntern Race! This is my video submission in which I answer the question: Which company is currently using social media the best and why?

I know a lot of people are going to point out the fact that I am talking about the amazing social media powers of Microsoft while sitting in front of multiple Apple products. But, like I said at the end of my video, this just shows that I am able to support any stance whether I agree with it or not because of my professionalism and dedication.

#TigerBloodIntern Round 3

Like I said before, I'm currently trying to earn a job of social media intern for Charlie Sheen and today I found out I made it to Round 3 of the #TigerBloodIntern race!  Rumor has it that only 200 of the original 74,000 applicants made it to Round 3.

Similar to Round 2, Round 3 requires the applicants to actually show they have the skills needed to fill this position.  Applicants are asked to make a 2 minute video discussing one of the three predetermined topics and, surprisingly, applicants are asked to dress professionally and take the video seriously.

The Round 3 applications reads:

Congratulations on making it to Round 3 of the Team Sheen Social Media Internship process! Team Sheen has received many qualified candidates for this position, and in Round 3, we'd like you to demonstrate your social media savvy through a 2 minute YouTube Video interview.

Here are the instructions:
  1. Create a YouTube video answering one of the three social media questions listed below. No video over 2 minutes in length will be considered. Only one submission is allowed.
  2. Dress professionally and take your answer seriously. Your video interview will be judged on quality of content and potential for community engagement.
  3. Clearly introduce your topic at the beginning of your video.
  4. After you have uploaded your video to YouTube, copy and paste your YouTube video URL into the box below and click SUBMIT. The deadline for submission is Friday night March 25th at 11:59 PDT.

Social Media Case Study Interview Questions:
  1. If you were the Social Media Director for a major humanitarian aid organization, how would you create awareness and raise money via social media in the aftermath of a global disaster?
  2. In your opinion, what is the best company using social media today and why?
  3. How would you advise a candidate running for public office to leverage social media in his or her campaign election?

Below is a screenshot of the Round 3 application.

I have yet to record my video but I will be doing it over the next few days. I'll post it once Round 3 closes!

Bring Joy One Penny at a Time Gala

I am interning this semester at the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan and as part of my internship I had been helping to plan a benefit gala.

Well the big gala was last Thursday at the DeVos Place in downtown Grand Rapids and it truly was a “motivating and inspiring” evening. Attendees paid $150 a seat and were also encouraged to donate more once they were there. And why wouldn’t they donate more? The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a wonderful organization that does so much good for so many sick children in Michigan.

I had been working with MAW in putting together this event for a few months. I mostly dealt with calling attendees and donors so I really had no idea about anything else, like the decor. The gala was under-the-sea themed and it was called Enchantment. There were tons of sand, (fake) coral reefs and fish, balloons as bubbles, a mannequin dressed as a suba diver hanging from the ceiling, girls dressed as mermaids, a giant clam, real boats “shipwrecked” in the venue, a wooden pirate ship as the stage, and a treasure chest.

The quality of the photos isn’t the best. You would never guess that I have a pretty good camera, right? It was super dark in the venue and the flash made everything real washed out looking so I used some fancy “theatre” mode my camera had.

I was honestly blown away by how all of this came together. I was speechless when I walked in and saw the end result.

We also granted a little girl’s wish for a puppy that night. She wanted an English Bulldog. So we got her an English Bulldog puppy! She was so happy. It was really cute!

The last two are the only pictures I had of me from the night. One of me in the bathroom (with my matching cell phone) and one of my boss, Cara and I.

I feel really lucky to have had the opportunity to be able to do something like this and to be able to work with these people. I really feel that I’ve learned so much more from this internship than just work experience. I had previously wanted to go into music or sports public relations but now I’m almost certain that I will end up in non-profit public relations or philanthropy.
