Free Online Classes at Stanford

Just after I ohh-ed and ahh-ed over Wayne State University's Communication and New Media graduate program, I've been blown out of the water again... this time by Stanford University.

Stanford continues to pioneer the way through the recent trend of Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) in realm of higher education. Thanks to long-standing prestigious universities such as Stanford, Harvard, MIT, and Berkeley along with the takeoff of online universities such as Coursera, Udacity, and edX, millions of of people now have access to study science, engineering, and humanities under the world's best professors from the comforts of their home computer--all without having a pay a dime! Yes, that's right... it's free.

The university says, "the courses are open to anyone with a computer, anywhere."

Stanford University is known for its students entrepreneurial spirit (Sergey Brin and Larry Page went here) and they want to share this spark for innovation!

This fall Stanford is offering 16 free, online courses. Most of these courses are in the expertise of technology and entrepreneurship. Here is what is coming up this fall:
  1. Machine Learning with Professor Andrew Ng, starting August 20
  2. Cryptography with Professor Dan Boneh, starting August 27
  3. Introduction to Mathematical Thinking with Professor Keith Devlin, starting September 17
  4. Probabilistic Graphical Models with Professor Daphne Koller, starting September 24
  5. Human-Computer Interaction with Professor Scott Klemmer, starting September 24
  6. Introduction to Logic with Professor Michael Genesereth, starting September 24
  7. Organizational Analysis with Professor Dan McFarland, starting September 24
  8. Writing in the Sciences with Professor Kristin Sainani, starting September 24
  9. Algorithms: Design and Analysis, Part 2 with Professor Tim Roughgarden starting in October 2012
  10. Technology Entrepreneurship with Professor Chuck Eesley, starting in Fall 2012
  11. A Crash Course on Creativity with Professor Tina Seelig, starting in Fall 2012
  12. Designing a New Learning Environment with Professor Paul Kim, starting in Fall 2012
  13. Finance with Professor Kay Giesecke, starting in Fall 2012
  14. Startup Boards: Advanced Entrepreneurship with Professor Clint Korver, starting in Fall 2012
  15. Solar Cells, Fuel Cells and Batteries with Professor Bruce Clemens, starting October 8
  16. An Introduction to Computer Networks with Professors Nick McKeown and Philip Levis, starting October 8
I'm totally nerding out over these classes! Cryptography?! Human-Computer Interaction?! I only wish I had the brain power to participate in these classes... instead, I will admire from afar!

If you're in the market to get involved with a start up, the Advanced Entrepreneurship class would be perfect. I'm jealous that I don't have a reason to take it! However, I am considering the Crash Course on Creativity!

What about you? Do any of these classes peak an interest to you?

First Impression of Online Classes

This is my first real week of grad school classes at Wayne State and they're all online!  I'm really excited to dive head first into my classes but everyone keeps telling me how difficult online classes are.  After my face-to-face introduction class, I'm pretty sure online classes will be a piece of cake.

But here are some of my reservations:

  • I'm a procrastinator, so I'll just keep putting everything off.
  • My love for multitasking my interrupt my studying/homework.
  • If I'm not forced to actually go to class (by attendance policy) will I actually read/listen to the online lectures?
  • If I ever get a "real" job, I won't be able to make time for my work.

But so far so good... I've read my first reading assignment and I'm getting started on writing the article that is due at the end of next week!
