Getting Ready for TEDxDetroit 2014!

TEDxDetroit 2014 is one week away!

To celebrate and to get people excited, the great people of TEDxDetroit has reached out to past attendees and see what everyone is most excited about.  Today they featured my interview on the TEDxDetroit blog.

Name: Katelyn Davis

Twitter Handle: @katelynshelby

How many TEDx events have you been to? This will be my third TEDx event that I have attended. Ever since the first one I attended, I’ve been hooked.

What are you looking forward to at this year’s event? Besides the speakers and the amazingness that is TEDxDetroit, I always look forward to meeting new people. My first year I went alone, but I met some great people who also attended alone. We kept in touch and the next year we met up again at the event and added some new people to our group. This year we’re all looking forward to expanding our group and continue to meet new people!

What was the best part of TEDxDetroit 2013? The best part of all the TEDxDetroit events is the contagious energy and passion. You can feel the excitement when you walk in the door. Everyone you meet has true passion and commitment for what they are involved with and when you leave, you leave inspired to feel the same way about something in your own life.

What advice would you give to a first time TEDx attendee? Come ready and prepared to meet and hear from some amazing minds. From the speakers to the attendees, every person you will come across has a story and is more than happy to share it with you. It’s enlightening. Also, there always seems to be a lot of surprises in store at TEDxDetroit!

If you are attending TEDxDetroit, please let me know... I'd love to meet up!

#313Dlove: Come Together to Show Your Love for Detroit

This week I stumbled upon 313Dlove on Facebook and I instantly felt my heart swell with pride and love.

**A side note to those who are not familiar with Detroit, 313 is the iconic area code for the city.

Just from a quick glance at their Facebook page and you can tell that these guys are genuinely passionate about the city and it's people and culture. It's absolutely beautiful.

As I dug deeper to find out more about 313Dlove and the method behind their maddness I came across a familiar name, Terry Bean. I, like many others, are probably familiar with this name based on Terry's involvement with TEDxDetroit. Terry Bean is the Executive Director for 313Dlove. This is destined to be a recipe for success.

So here's what I've figured out...

Previously 313DLove was an online "trend." At 3:13 p.m. people tweeted a positive message about Detroit with the #313Dlove hashtag. Detroit would often trend locally for a few moments and that was it. Detroit was strong, united, and sharing their passion with the world for 60 seconds.

But this year everything is different...

This year, as Detroit celebrates it's 313th birthday, things are different. Terry and fellow 313Dlove supporters have organized a huge event at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History on Thursday, March 13.

There will be speakers and attendees of all backgrounds that will be coming together to show their support and love for the city of Detroit. They are leaders in business, thought, non-profit and spirituality and they will take the stage and share their heart. They will discuss why they stay in the Detroit area and execute on big ideas like: Entrepreneurship, Community Forgiveness, Creativity, Leadership and more. This will be an amazing day full of great connections, inspiration and positive energy that will ripple throughout what was originally known as the 313. As an added bonus, a portion of the proceeds will be shared with four local non-profits.

And the goal is to trend #313Dlove on Twitter WORLDWIDE for the entire day in order to spread positive messages about Detroit and its community throughout the world.

“I get frustrated by the limited thinking,” Terry told the Detroit News. There’s no impulse control in some quarters, no recognition of the greater good, no understanding that “you can get yours and I can have mine, too.”

Among the goals of #313DLove is to provide “some direction, some inspiration, dare I say it, a kick in the butt,” he says.

Here is some other advice from Terry on how to help Detroit trend worldwide later this week:

How to get involved in #313Dlove

  • Like them on Facebook, here

  • The event costs $31.30 to attend
  • Attendance is limited to 313 guests

TEDxDetroit 2013: A Pep Rally for Detroit

I love TEDxDetroit. I look forward to it like a kid waits impatiently for Christmas! And, as always, TEDxDetroit did not disappoint this year.

I have always rooted for Detroit, showing my support in any way I can, and attending TEDxDetroit is like being a part of a huge Detroit Pep Rally. So many supporters. So many positive-minded people. So many great ideas and bright highlights of the future.

So I started the day by meeting up with an old time friend Joe Carioti who, as you may know, I've podcasted with intensively over the past 10 years on a plethora of subjects--most recently Social Media Meltdown. He introduce me to his friend Alex then introduced us both to his friend Tara. Joe is one of those guys that knows everyone. Not only is TED about the talks but it's about meeting new people and making new connections.
There were so many great, awesome, fabulous, inspiring speakers that took the stage on October 2, 2013 at Cobo Center's new Grand Ballroom. Here are some of my favorite soundbites and highlights from the day:

Jackie Victor, owner of Avalon Bread in Detroit, makes a great point here. Detroit is in a big mess and only true innovation will bring it out of that dark place.

I thought this selfie with the Google Glasses was cleaver. Then later this guy was featured in Jason Vazzano's talk about Vectorform and wearable technologies. Sorry, guy.

It really was a beautiful day. And when we were roaming around Cobo on breaks all pumped up from the talks it felt so good to stand in the sun and bask in Detroit's beautiful skyline.

Yes, you're reading that correctly. Backyard Brains did some crazy neuroscience stuff on a cockroach. You can read more about it on their website.

I'll remember the red wine next time!

Being in automotive and a technology junkie, John Capp's talk abut how automated driving isn't too far away made me so excited! Can you imagine everything we can accomplish during our work commutes when we no longer have to drive or pay attention?! Can you say naptime?

What can I say? Doin' my thang.

Like I said earlier, sorry for the selfie. I hope you saw this and didn't think I was too creepy.
Charlie LeDuff, wow. I really have a newfound respect for him and for him telling it like it is. He left the crowd speechless with his bluntness.
Here is what the mainstream media is saying:
BOTTOM LINE:
We are the X. The multipliers. The catalysts. The connectors. The amplifiers. The idea people who back it up with action. We challenge the status quo. We are creators, artists, entrepreneurs, designers, geeks, poets, scientists, thinkers and doers. We come together to collaborate, to share fresh ideas and to find inspiration. We believe Michigan is a great place to live, work and play. We are optimistic about our future. We believe Detroit's best days lie ahead. We are the people making it happen. We believe that is an idea worth spreading.

I am extremely interested in Jason Vazzano, co-founder of Vectorform in Royal Oak, who will focus his talk on wearable computing and incorporating technology into eyeglasses, watches and other accessories (i.e. iWatch, Google Glass). I'm also happy to see that Jackie Victor will be there--her Avalon baked goods are to die for! And of course, I'm excited to see Les Gold of Hard Core Pawn fame.

TEDxDetroit 2012

TEDxDetroit has announced that their next big event will take place on Friday, October 26 at two of Detroit's most iconic venues: The Gem Theatre and the Grand Army of the Republic Building (GAR). The event promises to be full of "inspiring sessions from Detroit’s finest business leaders, artists, entrepreneurs and musicians."

As always with TED events, space is limited. TEDxDetroit 2012 is now accepting applications for attendees. From these applications they will choose 100 people to attend this year's event. Don't worry if you are unable to attend the October event however, applicants will automatically be submitted for consideration for the larger spring event.

The application comprises of basic questions about yourself and several short written sections. I found the question of "Idea Worth Spreading?: What is your positive idea worth spreading for the future of Detroit, Michigan and the world?" the most inspiring. You can read my response below:
There are tons of positive messages and ideas in Detroit. We see it here every day. What we are missing is the proper reach across the country and throughout the world. Detroit can only be as "good" as the masses see us. Social media has the power to alter the perception of people everywhere by spreading these positive stories, messages, and ideas. Negative news about Detroit is quick to make national headlines but the same cannot be said about the inspirational stories that come from within this community. We need to change that. We have the power to change that.
Fingers crossed about attending. I think these events do great things for the cities in which they are held. Detroit needs these big thinkers!
