Women in Automotive? Where Are You?

My whole career I've been struggling with the lack of female active involvement and leadership in the automotive industry. Sure, there are women around here. I see them around. But besides the obvious omittance from leadership, there is also a noticeably low number of women who are actively participating in the automotive industry outside of their daily work day.

Last month at the MICHauto Summit (#MAS15)—an annual conference focusing on how Michigan can leverage its automotive heritage to lead the research, design and manufacturing of next-generation mobility technology—I looked around the Cobo Center Ballroom and I noticed I was surrounded by the same crowd as every other automotive event. Men.

Not only where the attendees primarily men, the speakers list was male dominated as well.

And honestly, I'm not that surprised. The dominating male representation at industry events is only a window into what is actually going on in the industry. What is STILL going on.

The Facts
The automotive industry talent pool is comprised of nearly 60% women. A number that still shocks me. If we're dominating the industry, why don't we make ourselves known? We have good insight and we deserve a voice. Why don't we take over?

We try but the fact is only 3.3% of executive positions in the automotive industry are filled by these women. This figure has varied little over the years, indicating change is happening more in the intent than in the reality. And while there are prominent women executives in automotive, the numbers show those women are virtually alone within industry leadership. Their rarity suggests that talented women have significantly greater opportunity in industries outside the automotive sector.

And you would think that with Mary Barra, the first female CEO of a major global automaker. holding reign at GM just down the street that we would begin to see the tides turning, at least locally, within the automotive industry.

The weirdest part about all of this: the automotive industry is driven by women. Annually, women spend $200 Billion on automotive vehicles and related services. Women are 80% of all automotive buying decisions made in the U.S.

But even though the industry depends on women consumers, we still don't have a larger presence in leadership roles. Why?

What Can We Do?
I don't blame this problem entirely on oppression from our male coworkers or a lost invitation from the good 'ol boys club but or mostly on ourselves. The first step into breaking through the glass ceiling (and staying above it) is making our numbers known. Remember, we make up roughly 60% of the industry's working professionals and we dominate the consumer audience. So why aren't we 60% of industry event attendees? 60% of the keynote speakers?

We need to go to these events. We need to network. We need to take the initiative to learn more. Learn everything humanly possible about this awesome industry we are all a part of. Be confident. And speak up! These are they things that cannot be taken away from us or kept out of reach, yet I seldom see women stepping forward. We need to take our place in the spotlight and make ourselves known! We need to be active participants in our industry. Once we are recognized as a force to be reckoned with maybe then we will earn the recognition we deserve.

But until we stop hiding behind our desks I will continue to be the minority—a lone purple dress in a sea of black and navy suits. If you're ready to venture out into the world, let me know and I'd be more than happy to be your ally.

If you're interested in becoming more involved in the automotive industry, check out Inforum's AutomotiveNEXT group. AutomotiveNEXT is a powerful network and supportive community for women in Automotive that inspires and empowers them to lean in, achieve their full potential, and make a lasting impact in the industry.

Getting Ready for TEDxDetroit 2014!

TEDxDetroit 2014 is one week away!

To celebrate and to get people excited, the great people of TEDxDetroit has reached out to past attendees and see what everyone is most excited about.  Today they featured my interview on the TEDxDetroit blog.

Name: Katelyn Davis

Twitter Handle: @katelynshelby

How many TEDx events have you been to? This will be my third TEDx event that I have attended. Ever since the first one I attended, I’ve been hooked.

What are you looking forward to at this year’s event? Besides the speakers and the amazingness that is TEDxDetroit, I always look forward to meeting new people. My first year I went alone, but I met some great people who also attended alone. We kept in touch and the next year we met up again at the event and added some new people to our group. This year we’re all looking forward to expanding our group and continue to meet new people!

What was the best part of TEDxDetroit 2013? The best part of all the TEDxDetroit events is the contagious energy and passion. You can feel the excitement when you walk in the door. Everyone you meet has true passion and commitment for what they are involved with and when you leave, you leave inspired to feel the same way about something in your own life.

What advice would you give to a first time TEDx attendee? Come ready and prepared to meet and hear from some amazing minds. From the speakers to the attendees, every person you will come across has a story and is more than happy to share it with you. It’s enlightening. Also, there always seems to be a lot of surprises in store at TEDxDetroit!

If you are attending TEDxDetroit, please let me know... I'd love to meet up!

PR|D: Renewing Detroit Through Public Relations

Last week I was lucky enough to attend the PR Detroit kickoff event, PR|D Symposium - Renewing Detroit: the Role of Public Relations which was held at Wayne State University.

PR Detroit is a newly formed group of Metro Detroit-based public relations professionals and companies working together to communicate positive messages for Detroit. Our mission is to facilitate positive news and information about the city with a vision of changing the national conversation to encourage positive change and growth in Detroit.

The symposium was intended for southeast Michigan public relations professionals to explore the challenges and opportunities for communicating positive message about Detroit within the context of the municipal bankruptcy. The symposium included a call to action and engaged the PR community to develop creative strategies for constructive, positive communication.

The entire event was packed full of powerful and influential speakers who are passionate about Detroit and here are some of my highlights and takeaways.

The Welcome
The PD|D Symposium's opening speech was given by Matt Segar, Dean of the College of Fine, Performing, and Communication Arts at Wayne State University; Bill Nowling, Spokesperson for the Office of the Emergency Manager of the City of Detroit; and Alexis Wiley, Director of Community Engagement and Spokesperson for the City of Detroit.

Challenges and Opportunities to Communicating Detroit's Story
This section was given by Peter Kageyama, author of For the Love of Cities.

Just like with the Marche du Nain Rouge where for 300 years, on the Sunday after the Vernal Equinox, Detroiters have celebrated liberation from the Nain Rouge, the fiendish embodiment of all that holds us back. Revelers dressed in costume converge at or near Cass Park and hope for better things for Detroit’s future, celebrating whatever is good and working in the city: happiness, success and freedom from the antagonism of the Nain in the new year.
A perfect example of turning something negative into something positive can be seen while enjoying a nice bike ride down the Dequindre Cut Greenway, an urban recreational path, officially opened to the public in May of 2009. The 1.35-mile greenway, developed through a public, nonprofit and private partnership, offers a pedestrian link between the Riverfront, Eastern Market and many of the residential neighborhoods in between. Formerly a Grand Trunk Railroad line, the Dequindre Cut is a below-street level path for bicyclist and pedistrians. This greenway is well-known for its urban artwork and graffiti, often times commissioned by famous graffiti artists.

You can also see more commissioned graffiti on a well-traveled section of Woodward between downtown and Midtown on the front facade of the Detroit Museum of Contemporary Art.

Panel Discussion: Current Efforts and Activities
Moderated by Marge Sorge, Executive Director of the Detroit Regional News Hub, this panel consisted of Ken Cockrel Jr., Director of Detroit Future City; Mary Kramer, Publisher of Crain's Detroit Business, Dave Lorenz, Manager of Industry Relations and International Marketing for Travel Michigan; and Paula Silver, formerly of Quicken Loans and Opportunity Detroit public relations.

My Takeaways
Based on the conversations that took place, these are the new unofficial guidelines came out of the PR|D Symposium:
  • Do not refer to a Detroit business, landmark, restaurant, or shop as a “hidden gem”
  • Do not describe Detroiters as “gritty”
  • Do not support “ruin porn" -- In fact for every picture of ruin porn you come across, post 5 more favorable and positive images of Detroit
  • Bring out of town guests to Detroit and let them experience it for themselves
  • Have elevator speeches prepared in case your encounter negative reviews during your daily life
  • Think outside of the box!
Future Directions
This was a fantastic event with a lot of great speakers and a lot of great suggestions from attendees on what we can do to make a difference using our PR superhero powers:

  • Create an online resource for educational materials and elevator speeches that we can use as PR professionals when asked to speak on behalf of Detroit and our business in the area
  • Work positive messaging into business materials and advertising about Detroit
  • Keep PR|D going
Now that event has come and gone, what will come out of PR|D? I'm hoping it is something big. Something great. It could be a dinner on the Ambassador Bridge, a citywide pillow fight, or more public art. At the very least, I'm hoping for a strong, singular branding campaign that melts together Detroit, its people, and the businesses that support it. More importantly, I'm hoping for a round two where steps will be taken to build a cohesive, active PR presence for the city as a team.

NOTE: The PR|D symposium was sponsored by PRSA Detroit, the Detroit Regional News Hub, and Wayne State University, with support provided by General Motors, Airfoil Public Relations, and Quicken Loans.

Up Coming Event: Social Media Day 2012

Share:

Mashable announced today its third annual Social Media Day will be held this year on Saturday, June 30!

Launched in 2010, Mashable's Social Media Day was a way to recognize the digital revolution happening right before our eyes. Whether its reporting about new online networks on Mashable or listening to inspiring stories from our readers, we’ve seen how this increasingly connected world is quickly changing lives across the globe — and our community agrees.

In 2010, there were more than 600 Meetups in 90 countries. That more than doubled in 2011 when there were more than 1,400 Meetups with thousands of attendees worldwide. Nine cities and one U.S. state have declared Social Media Day an official holiday.

Last year I attended Detroit's Social Media Day and did a live broadcast on social media with Girly Nerdy Goodness. This year Joe and I plan on going all out for an awesome live broadcast of Social Media Meltdown!

Detroit has yet to announce their official event plans so ours are still up in the air. Stay tuned for more details.

What You're Missing By Not Following SXSW

Obviously there is a lot going on at South by Southwest (SXSW)--music, film and "interactive." But what do they mean by interactive? Tech, of course! Social tech!

What You Missed at SXSW: Tech Launches
It has been common practice for tech start-ups to launch their product or service at SXSW. In 2009, Foursquare and Gowalla (RIP) both launched at SXSW. Whatever is buzzing at SXSW instantly becomes a social media and tech trend--last year SXSW was abuzz with Pinterest and now look at the masses! This year there were lots of mobile apps fight on the front lines, but these are the ones that stood out from the crowd.

Highlight is the "who's by me" app. Basically you can scan the area to see who in your general vicinity (on highlight) where you can then friend/follow them, if you please. At first this sounds creepy but if you think about it in the terms of traditional networking, if you meet someone at a conference and you want to initiate an online friendship or business networking you can simply scan the area for them in highlight. In today's society it is common networking to friend/follow someone you just met, this just makes it easier to find them to do so.
Task Rabbit is the "outsourcing" app. Basically think of a lame, mundane task or errand that has been on your "honey do" list for the past year that you keep putting off... now think about what it could be like if you could outsource it to a stranger who likes doing that task! There is someone out there who wants to fix your sticky door jam... for FREE! And now you can have Task Rabbit find them for you!

For other takeaway thoughts from this year's SXSW, check out this Huffington Post article on the eight biggest points.

I would really like to go to SXSW on year. Perhaps I'll make it next year!

Pinterest for Event Planning

Share this:

The DIY event planning is a booming trend right now with the increasing popularity in various event planning websites. Some of these websites charge a minimal amount for their ideas, kits and services. If you're looking to get away from those fees or just want to let your own creativity run wild there are other resources, that are not specifically suited for event planning, at your disposal.

One resource you might not think of for event planning would be Pinterest--one of the newest and rapidly growing social network.

If you're not familiar with Pinterest... Pinterest is an online community where users share pictures of things they like, which are categorized by theme on their own "pinboards." A person's pinboard follows the basic idea of literally thumbtacking something you like to a bulletin board as a way to share your interests with others. Users can re-pin, comment and share--thus being social! Subjects covered range anywhere from fashion to sports to travel to inspirational quotes to technology to interior design.

Pinterest is well known by its users as a tool for wedding planning. Even people who do not have plans to be engaged or get married any time soon, have "wedding" themed pinboards. To meet this popular demand, Pinterest offers a built-in "Wedding & Events" category but you can't rely entirely on this category.

Here are some ways you can use Pinterest to aid in your event planning:

Theme
There are some awesome party themes on Pinterest like this robot themed birthday party! But you can also find bachelor(ette) party ideas, anniversary party ideas, seminars, etc. Once you have a decided theme, you do a more specific search on just that theme to find everything you need that is a part of that theme (i.e. food, decorations, places, etc.)

Food
Pinterest is crawling with food and drink ideas--most of which are complete with recipes! You can find desserts, dips, and alcoholic beverages. To check and see if a recipe is available, use the picture click-through link and check the source of the photo (example: loaded baked potato soup). There's no doubt that you'll be inspired (and made hungry) by browsing through these pictures! You'll find something perfect for any event and audience that will fit any budget.

Decor
Pinterest is busting at the seams with decorations! You can either pick your theme first or just get inspired by the decorating ideas. A lot of the ideas are DIY so hopefully you're crafty or know someone who is!

Marketing & Promotion
You can find a lot of design ideas for graphics on Pinterest. Get inspired for your invitations and graphics to support your theme and decorations.

Location, Venue & Lodging
By searching through pins that fall into the Travel & Places category on Pinterest you can get an idea for locations for your event. You can search by specific cities to narrow it down or by searching "hotels" you can find photos of places you may want to put your guests up for the night. Most of the places you're going to find here are going to be either exotic or luxurious, so using Pinterest to choose a location might not be the best Idea. However, you might get inspired for a dream getaway event! For instance after seeing the above photo, my boyfriend and I are now trying to plan a vacation to this hotel (Inntel Hotel) in Amsterdam!

So what do you think? Will Pinterest help you plan your next event? Are you using it to plan a vacation? A wedding? I'd love to hear your planning with Pinterest success stories!
