Beware of Fake Sandy Pictures

Earlier today I was searching for live information coming out of NYC about Sandy. The first place I checked was Instagram because if I was there I would be gramming up a storm.

After searching IG for #newyork my feed became flooded with regram after regram of this picture:

Then it was all over Facebook along with an image of soldiers guarding the Tomb of the Unnamed Soldier in the rain paired with a caption stating they were enduring Sandy's wrath as their duty to stand guard.

I was instantly skeptical that these were real, however I scoured the internet trying to find the truth.

Then I came across a BuzzFeed article that confirmed my suspicions that these pictures was fake and outlined 10 other Sandy picture lines.

Don't fall for these people's photoshop trickery!

USA Today's Mark Smith, Senior of Social Media Marketing, offers up this advice for picking out a fake:
(from his Facebook) A tip on photo-sleuthing for you as we see more and more Photoshopped Sandy images. You can take an image file and drop it into the search bar of Google Images. Just drag and drop. Google then searches the web for similar images, tracking down everywhere online it's been published before. This is what the search for the viral photo of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (which was actually taken in September) looks like.

Here's my advice:
  • Don't get caught up in the hype with these types of things
  • Think about the likely hood of what you're seeing
  • Do some research to validate
  • There's a 90% chance that what you're seeing is fake

A Conversation with Carolyn Everson

Photo: Inforum
Today I had the absolute pleasure of attending an Inforum event in downtown Detroit, in which we got full access to an intimate and detailed conversation with Carolyn Everson, Vice President of Global Marketing Solutions at Facebook.

Carolyn Everson knows how to make brands more interactive and meaningful--more relevant to their audiences. She oversees the top 1,500 global brands on Facebook and the teams that support these brands. Her career includes some of the world's most recognized companies – Disney, MTV Networks and Microsoft.

During her interview with Scott Monty, Global Digital and Multimedia Communications Manager at Ford Motor Company, Carolyn talked about the growth and business culture of Facebook and how businesses should be using Facebook for marketing, as well as what it's like to be mother in her high-ranking position at one of the world's most successful companies.
Right off the bat she gave us some pretty intense stats:
  • 1 billion people have joined Facebook
  • 50 percent of all content on the internet is consumed through Facebook
  • 11 million small businesses are now on Facebook
  • 600 million people utilize the Facebook mobile app
  • Users check their Facebook mobile app, on average, 20 times per day
  • The average user, worldwide, has 150 Facebook friends; The average US user has an average of 250 friends
  • A Facebook post is seen, on average, by 16% of friends/fans
She ensured us that Facebook is the same company today as it was on its May 18 IPO and the same as it was prior to May 17. Their mission remains the same: to connect the world. Although they've surpassed the 1 billion member mark, as far as Facebook sees it, there are still a lot more to connect.
The bulk of the conversation revolved around what Facebook can do for brands. 11 million small business have taken their business to Facebook and opened pages, which leaves big expectations for Facebook. Carolyn ensures us "We (Facebook) have been constantly proving how we work for brands," and that all of Facebook's solutions for brands are meant to have a positive effect on ROI. Positive results come through back-and-forth dialog. The old model of one-way communication does not work on Facebook, Carolyn explained. People expect two-way communication--they respect it and they demand it. Whether you're a big brand or a small start-up, every business can have one-on-one relationships with customers through Facebook.

Bottom line is that Facebook is asking marketers to think in a new way. Carolyn explained that some people are eager to take on this new challenge, while other marketers just wish it would go away until they retire.

Facebook is also making people think about corporate culture in a new way. "The culture at Facebook is like one I've never seen," explains Carolyn as she describes offices without offices and honest and transparent internal communications. She describes the Facebook hacker culture and "solve it" mentality. All these qualities make for a progressive corporate culture. This will be the future for corporate culture.

Since this was an Inforum event there had to be a touch on women empowerment, so Scott asked about her work/life balance as a high-powered woman and a mother. She gave one simple answer: It's not about work/life balance but about work/life integration and it's not a women's discussion, it's a person discussion. I couldn't agree more with this point.
One of the most memorable lines from today was, "Working for Facebook is humbling. It creates things bigger than us." She explains about all the fundraising stories that become a success because of their platform and being getting life-saving organs thanks to Facebook outreach. She was so genuine. In a way, she seemed awestruck by what happens.

I honestly could have listed to her speak for hours. Not only does Facebook's business model and success amaze me but her outlook and perspective was refreshing... very progressive. It really got me excited for what the business world may look like as these trends continue to spread through corporate cultures.

I'm so happy I was able to attend this event and I'm even happier that this event took place in Detroit. I feel like we're starting to find our way back to the top--people can't ignore Detroit anymore!

Kudos to Scott Monty, for his perfect timing and interviewing skills, and to Inforum Michigan for putting on this great event.

Invites for iPad Mini Event Surface

It's finally here! Apple released on press invitations for its next big launch: the iPad Mini!

The invite says: “We’ve got a little more to show you.

"Little" is the keyword here. The iPad Mini tablet is expected to be much smaller than the current 9.7-inch iPad model. Rumors and leaks put the new tablet at 7 inches and at fewer pixels than the current size. Some are saying the new device could have a retina-resolution display, 3G connectivity, and use the new lightning connector introduced with the iPhone 5.

The invitation-only event will be held at the California Theatre in San Jose, CA on October 23 at 10:00 a.m. PT.

Weekly Wrap Up: October 7 - 13

Were you out for the count this week? Too busy to keep up with this week's big tech and social media news? It's okay, I've got you covered!
  • Apple Begins Production of iPad Mini - Asian suppliers for Apple have started mass production of a new tablet smaller than the current iPad with a 7.85-inch liquid-crystal display, executives at component makers said.
  • Some iPhone 5 Users Have Flickering Screens - The first reports started showing up on Apple’s Support Communities as soon as the device launched. The main thread for the issue is over 12 pages long with reports of the issue. Are you seeing an issue?
  • Want Button - After months of talk, it's finally official: Facebook is testing a "Want" button.
  • The iPhone 5′s Launch Boosted the Air Cargo Industry - FedEx restricted employee vacation and training to prepare for a surge in volume when the new iPhone came out. After all, if you sell more than 5 million units in three days, the only way to get them over from Asia is to fly them.
  • Facebook Cuts Back On Open Graph Actions - Facebook giveth and Facebook taketh. When FB first talked about the Open Graph at last year's f8 developer conference, there was the promise of a whole slew of apps that would feed into the ticker and news feed. But after more than a year, Facebook is cutting back on the types of actions that are allowed--presumably due to spam or messy use cases.
  • iPad Mini to Be Revealed October 23 - The latest rumor says: The iPad Mini (Apple’s unconfirmed cheaper and smaller version of the iPad tablet) will be unveiled on October 23, citing people familiar with Apple's plans. The iPad Mini was widely rumored to be revealed Oct. 17, with invitations supposedly coming Oct. 10, the invites never came.
And here are some fun things around the internet that you might find interesting!

ArtPrize: Collective Cover

This weekend I visited the final week of Grand Rapids, Michigan's ArtPrize event. ArtPrize is the world's largest art competition so there was far too much for me to see in two days! However I did my best--despite chilly temperature and off-and-on rain.

There was a ton of pieces I loved--like the winning artwork, "Elephants"

But there is one in particular that really caught my attention...

Welcome to Collective Cover

Collective Cover, by Ann Morton from Phoenix, Arizona, began in January 2009 and was completed this year. The project's story states:
Living by sheer circumstance through events large and small, over time we envelope ourselves with the shroud of our cultural influences. Each of us carries with us the story, experience and history of all of those from whom we've been born--families, communities, and societies, The Members in this Collective, just as in each of us, have embedded within them a unique set of circumstances, both known and unknown.
The artist and her colleagues collected nearly 300 objects that had been randomly discarded and found along roadways and in other odd places. The objects were numbered and archived. Once fully processed, the objects were shrouded in a white linen and labeled with a unique QR code.

The unique aspect of this collection is that the artist gives you a behind the scenes look what inspired her--the history of the object in question. If you would like to know more about the object rather than its linen covering, you can use your smart phone to scan the QR codes connected to each item. By scanning the code you can learn about the objects constructed history.

The Collective Cover gives what was once a lifeless and discarded item a future by "connecting it with the timelessness of cyberspace and relative reality."

I'm no art buff but I thought this was really well thought out and executed.  What I found most interesting was the way it intertwined art, the traditional museum experience and technology in a meaningful way.

In a sea of "traditional art" this definitely stood out to me. I'm sorry I don't have anything deep to say about this but like I said, I'm no art buff... but I sure did like scanning all the items at ArtPrize and having a little giggle with my roommate over what was in some of the packages and how they were originally found.

Stay tuned for another ArtPrize-theme post, possibly!

I've been sick this week and a little out of the loop. If there's anything you think needs to be added, let me know!

Motivational Monday: Don't be too busy for your life

We see this all too often. And sometimes I'm guilty of this exact thing. I've made a promise to spend more time with the things that matter in my life outside of work. I urge you to do the same or, before you know it, you'll be too old to enjoy your life if there is even anything left to enjoy. You should never be too busy for what you love!
