What It Was Like to Drive in a Self-Driving Car

Back in September I had the most amazing opportunity to ride around Detroit with IAV in their partially automated vehicle.

This VW was outfitted with IAV's automated technologies for automated driving. For this demonstration, the vehicle was designed for automated highway driving, so the driver manually drove the vehicle to Detroit's M10 where he then engaged the highway driving system. By using radars, sensors and cameras, the vehicle can calculate vehicles and objects around it and navigate traffic accordingly. The vehicle's cameras are also able to calculate lane markers to accurately steer as the road curves. Once on the expressway, the driver sets the automated system using switches similar to cruise control and once the driver presses the set button, the car will maintain its current speed and start lane marking. During automated driving active cruise control also kicks in and the driver can adjust the safety distance between the cars in front of him manually using buttons on the steering wheel at any time. The driver can also over-steer the system at any time to manually take control of the vehicle. I broadcasted my whole drive along on Periscope, you can watch the recorded version here:

There is definitely some work to be done. Like he mentioned with the lane detection which currently detects tar lines as solid lane lines which would prohibits the car to make lane changes on its own in fully automated driving.

But overall, this was an amazing experience. It was incredible to see where the future is headed in the very near future!

Movin' On Up!

I'm very excited and proud to announce that I've officially accepted a promotion with Team Detroit. With this move I will take on a writing role on the Global Team Ford communications team.

This new role will take me away from Ford World Headquarters and bring me in-house to Team Detroit to be part of the Content Factory.

This change has been in the works for months and I've had a hard time not talking about it but the pieces have finally come together and I could't be happier!

I'm really looking forward to this new role, new team, and exciting possibilities! I'm also very proud and pleased to have all my hard work and dedication recognized after such a short time with the company.

Here's to a new adventure!

Don't know what to do? Ask Twitter!

Last week Twitter announced that you would soon be able to poll your followers and other users on the platform with a multiple choice question.

If you want the public’s opinion on something — what to name your dog, who will win tonight’s game, which election issue people care about most — there’s no better place to look than on Twitter.

For poll creators, this is a great new way to engage with Twitter’s massive audience and understand exactly what people think. And for those participating, it’s a very easy way to make your voice heard.

Here's how it works:
  1. Select the icon you would normally click to compose a tweet (this functionality will be available on OSX, Android, and desktop when it is fully rolled out).
  2. From there you can click the poll icon which will allow you to create your own two-choice poll right from the compose box.

  3. Type your question into the Compose New Tweet box and add your carefully selected two choices into the lines below.
  4. When you're finished, click Tweet!
Once you click Tweet, your poll will remain live for 24 hours. Anyone can vote on any poll and how you voted is not shared publicly. They can also choose to share, favorite, and comment on the poll using the @Reply function.
So here's my question to you...

My Thoughts

  • Much needed addition. Although in the past Twitter has offered a few ways to participate in and conduct polls by tweeting questions and tracking replies, tallying hashtag votes, or asking followers to favorite or retweet to vote it was difficult and time consuming.
  • Poll choices are kept short. I know Twitter is the king of short-hand but the character limit for the poll responses are so short it's annoying.
  • Not enough choices. Two choices?! I'm not saying that there needs to be an unlimted amount of selections but there definitely needs to be more than two. The way it stands there isn't even room for a Yes, No, Maybe option!
Give it a try and let me know what you think! I'm looking forward to see how these polls pan out for brands and individuals alike!

Women in Automotive? Where Are You?

My whole career I've been struggling with the lack of female active involvement and leadership in the automotive industry. Sure, there are women around here. I see them around. But besides the obvious omittance from leadership, there is also a noticeably low number of women who are actively participating in the automotive industry outside of their daily work day.

Last month at the MICHauto Summit (#MAS15)—an annual conference focusing on how Michigan can leverage its automotive heritage to lead the research, design and manufacturing of next-generation mobility technology—I looked around the Cobo Center Ballroom and I noticed I was surrounded by the same crowd as every other automotive event. Men.

Not only where the attendees primarily men, the speakers list was male dominated as well.

And honestly, I'm not that surprised. The dominating male representation at industry events is only a window into what is actually going on in the industry. What is STILL going on.

The Facts
The automotive industry talent pool is comprised of nearly 60% women. A number that still shocks me. If we're dominating the industry, why don't we make ourselves known? We have good insight and we deserve a voice. Why don't we take over?

We try but the fact is only 3.3% of executive positions in the automotive industry are filled by these women. This figure has varied little over the years, indicating change is happening more in the intent than in the reality. And while there are prominent women executives in automotive, the numbers show those women are virtually alone within industry leadership. Their rarity suggests that talented women have significantly greater opportunity in industries outside the automotive sector.

And you would think that with Mary Barra, the first female CEO of a major global automaker. holding reign at GM just down the street that we would begin to see the tides turning, at least locally, within the automotive industry.

The weirdest part about all of this: the automotive industry is driven by women. Annually, women spend $200 Billion on automotive vehicles and related services. Women are 80% of all automotive buying decisions made in the U.S.

But even though the industry depends on women consumers, we still don't have a larger presence in leadership roles. Why?

What Can We Do?
I don't blame this problem entirely on oppression from our male coworkers or a lost invitation from the good 'ol boys club but or mostly on ourselves. The first step into breaking through the glass ceiling (and staying above it) is making our numbers known. Remember, we make up roughly 60% of the industry's working professionals and we dominate the consumer audience. So why aren't we 60% of industry event attendees? 60% of the keynote speakers?

We need to go to these events. We need to network. We need to take the initiative to learn more. Learn everything humanly possible about this awesome industry we are all a part of. Be confident. And speak up! These are they things that cannot be taken away from us or kept out of reach, yet I seldom see women stepping forward. We need to take our place in the spotlight and make ourselves known! We need to be active participants in our industry. Once we are recognized as a force to be reckoned with maybe then we will earn the recognition we deserve.

But until we stop hiding behind our desks I will continue to be the minority—a lone purple dress in a sea of black and navy suits. If you're ready to venture out into the world, let me know and I'd be more than happy to be your ally.

Scheduling Instagram Posts Is Now Possible But Not Convenient

Instagram—one of the fastest-growing mobile social networks—recently announced its integration with Hootsuite—a social media management tool—to help you manage, schedule, and monitor your Instagram activity in a whole new way.

"Publishing content to your Instagram profile can be a challenge - you can't always stop what you're doing to post at the optimal time of the day. By using Hootsuite to compose and schedule your Instagram posts, you can plan what you publish in advance and have a bird's eye view of all your upcoming social messages."

As a community manager and an avid Instagrammer, this feature was much needed and an absolute God-send but now that it's here I'm not entirely impressed by it. It is way too cumbersome and time consuming, not to mention it is far from being automated.

For starters, the process is lengthy:

1. Set up your post in Hootsuite
From Hootsuite you can create a post and attach a picture similar to what you would do with a tweet or Facebook status. In this step you will not be able to edit your picture, which includes cropping, adjusting the image, or adding a filter. You can add a caption, but I recommend not wasting your time. You'll see why in step 3. In this step you will also schedule a time (or use the auto feature) for it to post.

2. It's time!
It is important to note that while you can compose and schedule Instagram posts within Hootsuite, Instagram requires you to publish the post through the Instagram app on your mobile device. So when it's time for your image to post to Instagram, Hootsuite will send a push notification to your phone alerting you to take action. Contrary to what you may have expected Hootsuite isn't going to actually publish it for you like it does with all the other social networks it manages.

3. Review & Transfer
Once you click on the pop-up notification on your phone, you will be directed into the new Hootsuite Notification Center to review your scheduled post and send transfer it to the Instagram mobile app.

3. Copy Your Caption Out of Hootsuite
If you took the time to enter a caption into Hootsuite, it doesn't automatically transfer over. So Hootsuite is nice enough to copy it for you but once you get into the caption part of the process in Instagram, you will have to paste the caption into its place.

4. Make Sure Your Logged In Correctly
Hootsuite is also not able to verify and confirm that you are posting to the correct account so they give you a heads up to make sure you are publishing to your intended account.

5. Open in Instagram
Finally, after clicking Open in Instagram twice, you are finally transferred over to the Instagram app.

6. Business As Usual
Instagram opens as it usually does, this time with your image already loaded.

From here you can edit the image, crop it, and add your fav filter. You can either paste the caption your originally put into Hootsuite or you can make up an entirely new one. It doesn't really matter!

7. Post it!
Now that you have a new caption and a great filer plus wasted a whole lot of time with Hootsuite, it's time to click Share and post your picture to Instagram and wait for the likes to roll in!

And now you need a nap from all that work!

Remember in the beginning when Hootsuite said if understands you can't always stop what you're doing to post at the optimal time of the day so it was here to help? No, it's just here to nag us and remind us about how you need to stop what you're doing NOW and post a picture that you thought would be cool weeks ago that now isn't really relevant.

Need more help or have other questions? Download the Hootsuite / Instagram Quick Start Guide from Hootsuite.

Note: As Instagram requires posts to be published through its mobile app, you need to have both the Instagram app, as well as the latest Hootsuite mobile app to publish to Instagram. You can download it on the iTunes App Store or the Google Play Store.

Detroit Social Media Day 2015

Happy Social Media Day!

Mashable launched Social Media Day in 2010 as a way to recognize and celebrate social media's impact on global communication. While every day is essentially Social Media Day, June 30, 2015 marks the sixth-annual official global celebration.

Hosted by Social Media Association of Michigan (SMAMi) at MotorCity Casino & Hotel's SoundBoard, Social Media Day Detroit was held on Friday, June 26. The event kicked off with a great panel discussion about Detroit and technology and social media.

The panel was originally supposed to be focused on new ways to use technology to solve some of Detroit's problems, but it evolved into a deeper discussion about what those specific problems are and how they impact people’s lives. The esteemed panel included:

Why Guest Bloggers Are Your Brand’s Best Friend

Guest posting is a great way to get additional exposure for your brand and website! If done correctly, guest blogging can substantially increase relevant and targeted traffic to your site, which in turn can result in more customers and clients.

What is Guest Blogging?

First off, let's all get on the same page about guest blogging. Guest blogging or guest posting means publishing articles written by someone else who is not associated with your brand on your brand's website or blog.

The Benefits of Guest Blogging

Cost Effective
Some bloggers will want to write for the experience and exposure, while other writers want to be compensated. If you don't have the budget to pay for writers, search out writers who are building portfolios and would do it for free. Or consider paying your writers in free product (this is a good way to build your clientele, too).

Fresh Perspective
By allowing fresh voices to blog on your brand's behalf, you will grow a more diverse blog and audience with minimal effort. Your audience will enjoy and respect this new perspective as you both widen your horizons.

Increased Credibility & Trust
You may know a lot about your particular industry, but you don’t know everything about everything else. By branching out and diversifying your blog's content, you are widening your knowledge base and reach which increases your credibility on a wider range of topics by a wider range of people. Also, it is proven that consumers trust peer reviews more than they trust the brand's messaging. Use your bloggers to become brand ambassadors, gaining the trust of your audience.

For more information on how guest blogging can increase your site's SEO results and exposure as well as foster a healthy relationship with experts, what red flags to watch out for, and examples of brands doing guest blogging right, click here to read this post on my site, www.katelyndavis.com.

What It Is Like To Be Mentoring The Next Gen of Female Leaders

Last week my Girl Scout troop said "see you later" to each other as we concluded our first season of Scouting. As the girls left with all their badges and certificates, I was very proud of what we accomplished this year.

I am asked a lot why I decided to be a Girl Scout Leader and a lot of it had to do with feeling like I needed to use my good to empower young girls to be strong and to accomplishing something great.

My Journey

In my very short career I've worked my way from the world's largest privately-owned global companies to one of the leaders in the world's oldest and largest consumer industry. I've managed to do this all while running two of my own businesses and finding time to give back to the community. And in my last performance appraisal, I was regarded as "wise and professional beyond her years." But it wasn't until I was awarded, by the Michigan Business and Professionals Association, with the One Person Wonder award that I began thinking about how I got this far in only my early twenties.

About a year or so ago I was catching wind about the Girl Scout organization losing members and losing adult support for the programs. Girl Scouting was also losing funding because of the dwindling memberships. They were closing camps and ending initiatives.

I was a Girl Scout for about 10 years. It's not something I was never embarrassed about but sadly I never highlighted it or talked about my experiences. I remember all the great times I had in Scouts and I began thinking that maybe it was the key to my accomplishments—or at least responsible for my drive and determination.

Girl Scouting Works

Girl Scouting has long been known for its extraordinary effects on girls—both during and beyond troop involvement. In fact, 3 of every 4 girls say that because of Girl Scouts they have become a leader in more activities with their friends, classmates, and their communities.

The statistics prove that Girl Scouting has a lasting effect on women throughout their lives. When women were polled about how they felt about their professional accomplishments, 71% of Girl Scout alumni consider themselves competent and capable, compared to only 55% of non-alumni who feel the same. Also, Girl Scout alumni report higher incomes than those women never involved in Scouting.

And the accomplishments of Girl Scout alumni as individuals are astounding. In fact, 2/3 of U.S. Congresswomen were once Girl Scouts, at least 80% of women business owners were Girl Scouts, and nearly every female astronaut who has flow into space was a Girl Scout.

Empowering Girls to Lead

After reading up on staggering statistics of Girl Scouting success and hearing of the organization's struggles, I knew I had to do something. So I called the Girl Scout Council and started a troop of Brownies, 2nd and 3rd graders.

I know nothing about teaching children, and I don't pretend to, so I enlisted the help of my my cousin Abby, an elementary school teacher and fellow former Girl Scout, to co-lead the troop.

Together we built a curriculum that was fun but also provided them with valuable life skills, confidence, and knowledge that follows in line with the Girl Scouting values of discovery, making connections, and taking action. These three values make up the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.

Through a program centered around the Girl Scout Leadership Experience—a collection of activities and experiences including earning badges, selling cookies, exciting trips, exploring the outdoors, and making a difference—our young girls are able to get a jump start on leadership qualities.

To add to this complexity, Girl Scouting isn't just about "what girls do" but "how" they do them. And Girl Scouting focuses and stresses that troop programs need to be "Girl Led," meaning girls play an active part in figuring out the what, where, when, how, and why of their activities. In partnership with the leaders, girls lead the planning and decision-making as much as possible. This ensures that girls are engaged in their learning and experience leadership opportunities as they prepare to become active participants in their local and global communities.

Through Girl Scouting, they're able to develop and grow their critical thinking, team building, conflict resolution, and acceptance skills from a young age that take them far beyond the skill sets of their peers.

Our Journey, Together

Our troop, which consisted of nine 2nd and 3rd graders, prided ourselves on the overall qualities of being a Brownie:

B brave R reliable O observant W wide-awake N nice to know I industries and innovative E enthusiastic S sensible

Our troop was in session for about nine months this season and within those nine months we saw dramatic changes in our girls that are in line with the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.

Girls gain practical life skills.
A lot of people think Girl Scout Cookies Sales are just a fundraiser but it's so much more! Did you know the Girl Scout Cookies program is the largest girl-led business in the world? And that it teaches and builds some of the most important business skills the girls will use their entire lives? Through Cookie sales the girls practice goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics. Even our girls, 2nd and 3rd graders, learned and practiced daily "elevator speeches" and perfected their sales pitches to be used individually and during our troop cookie booths. We worked on our math skills by totaling orders, making change, and keeping an inventory of what cookies we had in stock. We also mastered customer service by making sure every girl was courteous, polite, helpful and knowledgeable about the product.

Girls seek challenges in the world.
During one of our meetings, we asked our girls where their favorite foods come from and the majority of the troop answered with "the grocery store." After that we took the next several weeks to focus on where our food comes from and how it is prepared. We visited a dairy farm to see how milk, cheeses, and ice cream is made and to learn to milk a cow. We used a juicer to make our own fresh and all-natural juices from apples and oranges. And we visited a local pizza place to learn about what goes into making everyone's favorite food! All of this was a lesson to show that fresh foods, straight from the source is always a better and healthier option. To help the girls get closer to their food source, our troop started a community garden plot to grow our own vegetables.

Girls advance diversity in a multicultural world.
Our troop was made of up girls from all types of backgrounds including family structure type, economical status, special needs, and ethnicity. The girls are all very open about who they are and where they come from and none of them saw each other any differently because to them we are all Girl Scouts.

Girls feel connected to their communities.
Our first show of support for our local community and the Girl Scouting sisterhood was though a public display during the local Christmas Parade. They walked alongside our banner and waved to the community, proudly representing Girl Scouts. To become even more involved in the community, the girls joined the local community garden where they have a plot of land to grow their own vegetables so they can continue learning about where our food comes from and how it is prepared.

Girls advocate for themselves and/or others.
Amidst all the fun and exciting activities, we suffered the loss of one of our Scout's parents. Despite everything she was going through, the one place she wanted to be was at Girl Scouts. The sisterhood and support the girls provided is amazing!

An Honor to Lead

Now that our first scouting season has come to an end, I couldn't be more pleased with what we've accomplished. And it doesn't help that we are getting a lot of great feedback from our parents too.

Just think, one day, one of these girls could be the next industry leader, Nobel Peace Prize winner, President, or groundbreaking scientist. They could change the world. The possibilities are endless. These girls are our future. So to be a part of this organization and to work with these girls, is an honor and a privilege.

Detroit Celebrates Technology's Role in the City's Renaissance at World-Renowned Social Media Day Event

Social Media Association of Michigan is proud to bring the 6th Annual Social Media Day presented by Mashable
to Detroit’s MotorCity Casino and Hotel.

June 26, 2015 marks the date of the 6th annual Social Media Day celebration taking place in Detroit—bringing together influencers and innovators to talk about social media, Detroit, and technology’s ultimate role in a re-surging city’s success—hosted by the Social Media Association of Michigan (SMAMi).

Weekly Wrap Up: April 26 - May 2

Here's what you may have missed in the world of tech and social media:

  • Ford hijacks Microsoft's 'Edge' browser announcement - Microsoft has unveiled a new browser to replace Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, at its Build conference this week. Microsoft Edge will become the default browser on Microsoft's latest operating system, Windows 10, and sees the tech firm moving away from the 'hated' Internet Explorer brand. Not everyone shares the hate for Explorer though, with Ford quickly giving its pun-fuelled two cents on the news.
  • Microsoft's Edge Will Let You Scribble On The Web - When Microsoft's new Internet Explorer replacement, officially dubbed Edge, arrives with Windows 10, it will offer users some new features, including the ability to annotate webpages and share notes.
  • Uber Is Quietly Testing A Massive Merchant Delivery Program - Uber is planning to launch a merchant delivery program that would allow online shoppers to get same-day delivery of goods through both UberRush couriers and Uber drivers. TechCrunch has obtained training documents for Uber drivers and couriers who are part of the merchant delivery pilot program.
  • The Next Version of Google Glass Might Look like Ray-Bans - When Google announced back in January that it would stop selling Google Glass, we hoped that tech titans would keep the clunky smart frames off the shelves until they had undergone a makeover. Now it looks like those months of sending good sartorial vibes Silicon Valley’s way have paid off: WSJ reports that Google is partnering with the makers of Ray-Ban to launch a brand-new version of Glass.
  • Facebook Testing New Notifications Tab - Facebook is planning to give its notifications a major makeover, converting it into a central hub for news from across the site, according to Mashable, which first reported the news this week. Facebook is currently testing the new notifications tab and will begin rolling it out to mobile users sometime in the near future, per the same report.
  • Preview Instagram’s New Filters + Just-Released Emoji Update - Available this week for iOS and Android users are three modern, subtle filters and a new way to search using emoji hashtags. These features cannot be found on that third-party desktop or Instagram apps.

Some love them and swear by them and others feel that their money can be better spent elsewhere. Based on my research, here is the rundown of how QR codes in marketing fair in the grand scheme of things:

What is a QR Code?

Similar to a bar code, a QR Code is a machine-readable code consisting of an array of black and white squares, typically used for storing URLs or other information for reading by the camera on a smartphone. QR Codes can hold a larger amount of information than its bar code predecessor.

When a user scans them with a specially downloaded mobile app, QR Codes will direct them to a specific place is the digital realm (to a website, document, form, etc.).

You may have seen these codes out in the wild. For example they've been used on signs at the zoo, Taco Bell cups, and by realtors to help sell homes.

Usage of QR Codes

The numbers are staggering when it comes to the statistics of QR Code usability:
